Juice doesn’t have to derail a diet
Some juices are very caloric and sugary, but others are excellent diet aids.
It can be hard to know what you can and can’t eat or drink on a diet. Just a few years ago, fitness magazines and healthy-living websites were telling us that butter was poison and a handful of nuts would instantaneously inflate us like helium balloons. And now? Those same magazines are telling us to drink almond milk exclusively and melt butter into our coffee. Yeesh.
10 Best Juices for Weight Loss (Slideshow)
In all the back-and-forth over what’s healthy and what isn’t, ideas about juice get volleyed back and forth constantly. On one hand, you have dieticians that will tell you that fruit juice is the quickest way to add unnecessary sugar and calories to your diet this side of mainlining chocolate cake. But on the other, dieticians and celebrities alike sing the praises of juice cleanses, shouting from the rooftops that strange combinations of fruit and vegetable juice are a quick way to shed pounds and reset your system for a body so svelte that you’ll become invisible standing behind street signs.
So, whom should you believe? The “juice is evil” folks or the “stop chewing food and switch to juice” camp?
Neither. Store-bought juices that are high in calories and sugar (think apple and orange from concentrate) can sabotage a diet, says Lori Kenyon-Farley, co-founder of USDA certified Ritual Wellness. However, homemade juices that combine leafy green vegetables and certain fresh fruits can add essential fat burning vitamins and minerals to enhance your diet and boost metabolism without adding a lot superfluous sugar.
The following list represents the best of the best when it comes to veggies and fruits with juice that contains essential ingredients for a healthy diet. Of course, restricting calories and maintaining an active lifestyle are the main components for weight loss, but combing any of the following juices is a great way to supplement a diet and fast track yourself to a healthier body.

3 Rules When Juicing for Weight Loss
As you can see, there are a lot of inherent ways in which juicing can help you lose weight. But the tricky thing about juicing for weight loss really depends not on whether you’re juicing or not juicing, but rather on how you’re juicing.
Juicing can either be your best friend on your weight loss journey or it could be a malicious frenemy. It really comes down to how you do it.
To help you stay on the right side of juicing for weight loss, here are a few juicing mistakes you should be aware of – as well as suggestions on how to avoid these weight loss traps.
Count Those Liquid Calories
This one is a very common deterrent to weight loss and not just when it comes to juicing.
For some reason, we have this strange tendency to dismiss the calories in the drinks we have on a day-to-day basis.
It could be anything – the sugar in and cream in your coffee, that “healthy” store-bought fruit juice, the energy drink that keeps you going, or even the salad dressing you choose for your salad.
Whatever it is – it’s easy to forget that the calories we drink are calories, too, even if you don’t have to chew them down!
Vegetables, on the whole, are very, very low in calories but fruits can be quite high. Stick to low-calorie fruits like melons and berries while you’re juicing for weight loss and keep track of how much fruit juice you’re drinking on a daily basis so you can make sure it doesn’t go over your calorie limit.
Fruit Juice for Weight Loss – Do or Don’t?
Fresh fruit is great for you – but even as a juicing fanatic, I will openly admit that fruit is better eaten whole or blended than juiced.
Whereas removing the fiber out of vegetables has the huge benefit of making it easy for your digestive system, the fiber in fruit serves a really important purpose of keeping sugar consumption and the resulting insulin spike to a minimum (crucial for weight loss).
That being said, fruit is not the devil and you can, of course, juice fruit even as you are juicing for weight loss purposes. Just be smart about it – include fruits in your juices only to use the parts of fruit that you normally wouldn’t eat (i.e. peels, rinds, and cores that you can juice!) and to add sweetness and flavor to the less-palatable vegetable juices.
Always opt for low-calorie fruits. Melons, like watermelon and cantaloupe are low in calories and provide lovely sweetness. Same for berries.
When you can, opt for sweeter veggies like bell peppers, sweet potatoes, sweet squash, carrots, tomatoes, and beets.
And seriously, if you’re juicing for weight loss – don’t drink purely fruit juices. Try to stick to the 80/20 rule: that’s 80% veggies in every juice and only 20% fruits.
Don’t Leave Out Vital Nutrients
Fresh juice is wonderful for your body. It provides a nutritiously dense glass loaded with vitamins, minerals, and living enzymes…but it does not contain all the nutrients your body needs.
Specifically – fresh juice does not contain enough protein or healthy fats, which your body needs for optimal function. Not to mention how beneficial both protein and healthy fats are in any weight loss effort.
Make sure you’re getting enough protein from sources like lean meat, fish, legumes, nuts and seeds. If you’re juice fasting for weight loss or just don’t get enough protein in your diet, add soy milk or quinoa milk (both of which have as much protein as cow’s milk) or supplement with a good protein powder.
If not getting enough protein is a perpetual pattern, I strongly recommend you consider a protein powder. Optimum Nutrition’s whey protein powder is one of the best on the market. If you’re vegan/vegetarian, the best is Garden of Life’s raw, vegan, plant-based protein powder.
As for healthy fats, it’s a good idea to add a good, EPA and DHA-abundant fish oil supplement to your diet – especially if you’re doing a juice fast – to make sure you’re getting enough essential fatty acids (EFAs). Remember that your body cannot synthesize these but they are essential, so be sure to give your body enough.
Another option is to add in a good dose of healthy fats by supplementing your juices with a low-calories nut milk like almond milk, which is only around 40 calories per cup.
However you do it – just make sure you are supplementing your juices with plenty of protein and healthy fats.
The 10 Best Juices for Detox and Weight Loss
For losing weight and helping your body control oxidative free radicals and toxins, you’ll want juices that are packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a little bit of healthy fat. To achieve this, the ingredients center on dark leafy greens, mild colorful vegetables like pumpkin and beet, a little fruit, and spices. Fruit juices are super tasty, but vegetable juices with less sugar are better for weight loss and detoxing. We include a mix of low-sugar vegetables and nutrition-packed fruits so you get the best of both.
Adding fat isn’t essential, but it helps your body absorb fat soluble vitamins and phytonutrients, and provides sustained fullness instead of a glucose spike and crash. Add a quarter or half of an avocado, some ground nuts or seeds, olive oil, or coconut oil to any juice to supply healthy fats. Protein has a similar satiation effect and has been shown to support weight loss, so consider adding some protein powder, nuts, or tofu to your juice.
For each recipe, simply put all ingredients in a high-powered blender or food processor and run until smooth, adding more water as needed. Why not a juicer? When you use a juicer, the skin and most of the fiber is stripped from the fresh produce. That is the absolute last thing you want for weight loss, since fiber helps you feel full with fewer calories. In addition, fiber helps slow the rise in blood glucose after eating, which may also help support weight loss. This is especially important for fruit-based juices. Fruits contain a lot of natural sugars, and drinking juice with all the fiber taken out isn’t all that much better than drinking soda. Finally, the antioxidants of many fruits are concentrated in the skins. As long as the skin is edible, it’s better to blend the whole thing up and make sure you get every last bit of nutrition.
Broccoli stem? That’s right! Don’t throw it out after cutting off the florets for cooking, save it for juices! The stem has a milder flavor than the buds, but contains just as many nutrients including fiber, antioxidants, vitamin E and selenium, and anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, broccoli contains compounds that increase the activity of detoxifying enzymes in the liver. Cilantro is a great source of vitamin C, and it may help encourage detoxification by binding to heavy metals.
- 1 medium broccoli stem, chopped into small pieces
- 1 handful cilantro
- ½ cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped
- 1 cup dark leafy greens
- Squeeze of lemon juice
- ½ cup water
Dark leafy greens are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, as well as fiber that supports weight loss. Beets and raspberries contain fiber too, plus flavonoids known as anthocyanins that supply their beautiful colors. Mixed together, they have a great flavor that’s pleasantly sweet and earthy.
- ½ cup cooked beets
- ½ cup raspberries
- 2 cups loosely-packed leafy greens
- ½ cup water
Chocolate is a delicious way to include flavonoids and other antioxidants in your diet. Using raw organic cocoa powder is one of the best options, since it contains no added sugar. Nutrient and fiber-rich spinach is mild enough that its flavor doesn’t compete with the chocolate. This juice also includes blackberries, which provide fiber, anthocyanins, vitamin C, and a little sweetness, as well as avocado for creaminess, healthy fats, and antioxidant vitamin E.
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 cup packed spinach leaves
- ½ avocado
- ½ cup blackberries
- ¾ cup water
Berries are one of the most concentrated sources of antioxidants, containing anthocyanins, phenols, and flavonoids. Plus, they are high in fiber and low in sugar. Cloves contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds as well, including eugenol. Cinnamon contains polyphenols that help increase insulin sensitivity and control blood sugar.
- 1 cup raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries
- 2 cups dark leafy greens
- ½ cup water
- ⅛ tsp cloves
- ⅛ tsp cinnamon
This bright orange juice is full of equally bright flavors and powerful nutrients. Carrots are high in carotenoids – a type of antioxidant – and fiber. Oranges are a good source of vitamin C, which helps protect the body from free radical damage. Ginger has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, plus it’s great for digestion.
- 1 cup sweet baby carrots, chopped
- 2 juice oranges, peeled, seeded, and chopped
- ½ – 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
In Central America and India, where mangoes are a popular local treat, they are sometimes eaten with salt and chili powder! This combination of sweet, salty, and spicy works perfectly, and it’s great for you. Cayenne may boost metabolism and aid weight loss, and mango is a good source of potassium, vitamin C, carotenoids, minerals, and fiber.
- 1 cup fresh frozen mango, cubed
- ¾ cup water
- Pinch chili powder
- Small pinch salt
Pumpkin Pie Smoothie
Coconut oil is high in a unique type of saturated fats called medium chain fatty acids. Unlike long chain fatty acids, these smaller molecules don’t circulate throughout the body – which increases the risk of contributing to atherosclerotic plaque and body fat – but move directly to the liver where they are burned to supply energy. The ‘eat fat to lose fat’ idea may sound counterintuitive, but studies have shown that consuming some medium chain fatty acids helps with weight loss. Pumpkin is a great source of potassium and antioxidants like beta carotene and vitamin C, as well as fiber that helps you feel full. The spices in the recipe have compounds that have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation in the body.
- ½ cup pumpkin purée
- ½ cup coconut milk
- ¼ – ½ cup water
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp fresh grated ginger
- ⅛ tsp cloves
Savory Tomato Juice
This recipe is inspired by the Spanish soup gazpacho. Tomatoes supply the antioxidant lycopene, and the small amount of olive oil ensures that your body can absorb it well. Parsley, cilantro, and garlic provide vitamin C along with other potent anti-inflammatory compounds. Cilantro can also help flush heavy metals from the body.
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- ½ cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped
- Handful fresh parsley
- Handful fresh cilantro
- 1 very small clove fresh garlic, or a slice of a larger clove
- 1 tsp olive oil
- Pinch salt
This light, refreshing juice is high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals supplied by the spinach, berries, and cucumber. The mint helps calm the digestive tract and relieve stress.
- 2 cups spinach
- ½ cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped
- ¼ cup blueberries
- ½ cup water
- Small handful fresh mint leaves
As we explained above, the medium chain fatty acids in coconut support weight loss. This juice gives you an extra boost of healthy fats with omega-3 rich flaxseeds. There’s also broccoli stem to support the natural detoxifying action of your liver enzymes, dark leafy greens for fiber and antioxidants, and lemon juice for vitamin C.
- ¼ cup coconut milk
- 1 broccoli stem, chopped
- 2 cups dark leafy greens
- 2 tsp ground flaxseed
- Squeeze lemon juice
- ¾ cup water

That’s where the juice recipes for weight loss can help fill the gap.
The diet of detoxification juice has become very popular in recent years as an easier way to consume many nutrients without having to eat many whole fruits and vegetables.
Therefore, if you struggle to get enough vegetables and fruits in your diet, read on to discover how a detoxification of juices can help you lose weight, eat more vegetables and help detoxify your body.
What is detox juice?
Detoxification juice is the nutritious juice that is extracted from fruits and vegetables using different methods, even by hand or with an electric juicer.
With a 3-day detoxification juice, only drink juice and water for a period of time, usually for 3 days, so that the liver and digestive system can detoxify.
During cleaning, try to drink every 2 to 2 ½ hours and try to be consistent. Skipping a juice can disrupt your blood sugar levels and cause you to get rid of juice detoxification.
Key point: the detoxification juice is the nutritious juice extracted from fruits and vegetables. You drink during certain periods to give your body time to detoxify and lose weight.
Benefits of detoxification juice
For many people, it can be difficult to get the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The detoxification juice provides that extra nutrition that your diet lacks.
These are the main benefits of a juice detoxification:
- It helps you lose weight quickly.
- Improves absorption of nutrients.
- Feed good bacteria in your intestine.
- It helps reduce cholesterol.
- It helps detoxify your liver.
- It reduces the levels of sugar in the blood.
- Improve your skin
- Expand the range of vegetables you eat.
- Improves athletic performance
Since the juice does not contain fiber, it does not have the same digestion needs as normal foods. The nutrients are more easily absorbed by your body.
Fresh juices do not burden your body with digestion needs, and it gives your body time to eliminate toxins and detoxify.
Key point: the detoxification juice contains many beneficial nutrients due to its healthy raw ingredients. It can be used to help easily increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Detox juice to lose weight
There are two main ways in which you can use juice recipes to lose weight, a total juice fast, in which you consume nothing but juices over a period of time, or a balanced replacement of foods with juice.
Option # 1 – Quick Juice
The first way to lose weight with the juice is to make a single fast of juice without eating any solid food. This is what Joe Cross did in Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead for 60 days and that made him lose more than 100 pounds.
This juice diet plan requires a lot of discipline and preparation, and can actually be dangerous if it is not done well. Do not fast fast without first talking to your doctor.
It is not necessary to do a 60-day fast like Joe Cross did, that is an extreme example. 7 days is the longest I recommend you do a fast fast total.
You can also get many health benefits with a 3-day detox cleansing.
Option # 2 – Use as a balanced meal replacement
The other way to use juice recipes to lose weight is to incorporate it into your daily lifestyle and replace 1-2 unhealthy meals per day with a serving of detox juice.
Use it to replace high carbohydrate foods such as rice, bread, pasta, soft drinks, bottled juice and fried / processed foods. This is by far the healthiest way to lose weight in the long term.
It is important to use mainly the juice of the vegetables and only use some fruits as a sweetener. Vegetable juice is lower in calories and generally has more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
Key point: detoxification juice can be used to lose weight, either by drinking only detoxification juice for a period of time, or by using it to replace unhealthy foods.
It is important to use a minimum amount of fruit when it comes to losing weight with the detoxification juice.
How to make detox juice
The most basic method is to squeeze a fruit or vegetable by hand, but for most people you will want to use an electric juicer.
With an electric juicer, just add the ingredients.
Each recipe for detox juice is then made in the same way:
- Step 1: Wash all the ingredients thoroughly and dry.
- Step 2: Cut the fruit and vegetables into 1-inch to 2-inch pieces. Remove the shells.
- Step 3: Place all the ingredients in a juicer.
- Step 4: Process in the juice according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
